Surf Lessons FAQ

Stand up paddle lessons raise different questions than surf lessons, especially around balance, board size, where you will paddle, and what conditions are best for learning. This FAQ covers stand up paddle lessons in Waikiki with clear answers on lesson structure, beginner progression, safety, and what to bring so you can choose the right option and arrive confident and prepared.

Yes. SUP is one of the most accessible ways to get comfortable on the water because you can start in calm, shallow areas and progress at your own pace. Micah focuses on stance, balance, turning, and efficient paddling so you feel stable quickly.

No. Basic comfort in the ocean is helpful, but you do not need prior board sports experience. The lesson can be paced for your fitness level, with breaks as needed, and most beginners get comfortable once their stance and paddle technique are dialed in.

Lessons are usually held in sheltered, beginner friendly water in Waikiki where conditions are calmer and there is room to practice. If ocean conditions are choppy, Micah will choose the safest, smoothest area available that day for learning and control.

SUP paddling focuses on balance, efficient strokes, turning, and handling small chop while cruising in calm water. SUP surfing adds wave timing, positioning, and board control on moving water. If you want to try small waves, mention it so the lesson can be structured for that goal.

Bring swimwear, a towel, water, and sunscreen. A hat and sunglasses with a strap can help on bright days. Boards and paddles are provided, and you will be advised on anything specific based on the conditions.

Falling is normal at first. Micah will adjust your stance, foot placement, and paddle use to make you more stable, and can start you in shallower, calmer water. Most beginners improve quickly once technique and posture are corrected.
