Surf Lessons FAQ

Group surf lessons often raise questions about who you will be surfing with, how instruction is shared, and whether safety and progress are still prioritized in a group setting. This FAQ explains how group surf lessons in Waikiki are structured, how groups are formed, what supervision looks like in the water, and what to expect so you can decide if a group lesson is the right fit and arrive confident and prepared.

Canoes is typically the safest and most predictable option for kids because the waves are gentler and the learning zone is closer to shore. Depending on conditions, Micah may use nearby beginner friendly areas, but Canoes is the usual choice when the goal is calm, controlled progress.

Very young kids can participate. For small children, Micah may have them surf together with him on the same board rather than putting them on their own board right away. The setup depends on size, comfort in the water, and how they respond at the shoreline.

Both are possible. A private kids lesson is best for nervous beginners or fast progression. Siblings can share a lesson when their ages and confidence levels are similar, so the pace stays smooth and safe for everyone.

Not always. Many kids start on their own board, but if your child is very young or hesitant, Micah can start by riding with them and gradually transition toward independence when they are ready. The priority is confidence and control, not rushing.

Bring a swimsuit, towel, water, and sunscreen. If your child prefers extra sun protection, bring a long sleeve sun shirt as well. Surfboards and the main lesson gear are provided.

That is common and totally workable. Micah starts on the beach with simple, confidence building steps, then eases into shallow water and short rides at a pace your child can handle. The lesson can stay conservative while they get comfortable.
