He let her stand with him on his board so that she could enjoy surfing as a first timer without any equipment or fear. I just went to be her guardian so I wasn't expecting myself to be having much action. It was a happy shock that I was able to actually stand and ride the wave with my not so much athletic skills. Micke's surfing and camera skills are amazing, and I'm glad my daughter wanted to try surfing and we gave it a shot. \t\t\t\t\t\t\tMy son is 14 and starts high school this year, so we took a little vacation to Hawaii to wrap up our summer and start high school off on the right foot. I thought it would Be fun to take surf lessons while in Hawaii. There are so many surf instructors and we were just so blessed to find the absolute best surf instructor on planet earth. Here's how it went down: Mickey was easy to contact and we were able to work out the details by phone and text. He told us to meet him at the Duke Statue on Waikiki Beach. There is only one Duke Statue on the beach so that was easy. My son and I paid $100 for a hour and half surf lesson. The lesson started out on the beach learning the basics of how to stand up on the surfboard from your belly. This is what every instructor does to start their lesson. However, once we got into the water, Mickey separated himself from every other instructor on the island. While the other instructors are out there in the water with you, they basically guide you with words on how to ride a wave. Mickey? Our surf instructor? Mickey sits on a board right next to you, keeps his foot in the board to keep It balanced for us beginners and when the perfect wave comes, he stays next to you and tells you the perfect time to stand up on the board. I mean talk about someone being there every step of the way? My son, Joseph got up first using this awesome teaching technique, and just a few moments later, he was able to use the confidence he gained to get up and ride the wave all by himself. So, what I'm saying is that my kid went from total non surfing novice to a kid riding his own waves in a span of about 15 minutes. And me? 50 year old chubby dad? I was also able to stand up on my board with Mickeys awesome and totally unique teaching method. No one else was out there teaching like this. My main point is that I'm sure there are many \"good\" surf instructors on Waikiki beach but somehow, someway, by the grace of the Almighty, I was introduced to the absolute best instructor out there, bar none. He took videos of our entire lesson from leaning the basics on the beach to the moment you stand up and everything in between, and I promise you, with his 100% hands on method of teaching, you and your friends or loved ones will stand up on that surfboard and feel like a surfer by the end of that lesson. A good surfer? That all depends on what you do after your lesson with Mickey and how much time you're willing to put in, but one thing is for sure, I just dropped my son off for his first day of high school and I'm sure that a good percentage of the confidence that he displays today was earned this past Saturday from 330 pm To 5 pm on Waikiki beach courtesy of the best surf instructor in Hawaii, Mickey the Man!! Thanks Mickey! We will be seeing you again in a few months hopefully. We can't wait to get back and ride more waves with you. That was so fun! Folks, This man teaches you how to surf with the spirit of Hawaiian \"chill\" like no other. Listen, if you want to stand up on your surfboard during your lesson, then contact Mickey because that's what h does. He gets you up on that surfboard. If he can get my chubby 50 year old body to stand up on a moving surfboard, then he can certainly do it for you. Seriously. He's the best. P. S. \t\t\t\t\t\t\tAfter reading all the great reviews, I decided to give Micah a try. He was so responsive to my text and his rate was very reasonable and affordable since we wanted a semi private class for just our family of 3. Right after I made the reservation, he sent me two videos so we could learn some basics prior to our lessons. We were supposed to meet him at 10am. We arrived early, texted him but didn't hear any responses. A few minutes went by but we still didn't see him. We thought we got scammed. We already paid him on Venmo. There's not much we could do if he doesn't show up. Well, I scared myself over nothing. I'll tell you why he was late towards the end. My husband, my teenager son and I had our lesson with Micah today and we had a blast! My husband and I took a surfing lesson with another company many years ago but we failed a big time. My husband doesn't coordinate well in general and has hard time following directions but today he did well! He was motivated to work hard because Micah explained things so well and clear. My son and I were so surprised to see how well my husband did (My husband is usually a couch potato.) My teenager son also had a great time. I booked him another lesson with Micah tomorrow and my son agreed to it. My son refused to go to Hanauma Bay because he doesn't want to go snorkeling. BUT he wanted to take another surfing lesson! That says a lot. My son has a pattern where if he had a bad experience to do something for the first time, he would refuse to give it another try. At the beginning of the lesson, I told Micah I am not a strong swimmer. After seeing how exhausted I got from just paddling, he gave me extra help without making me feel bad. Not only is he skillful in teaching surfing, he's very personable, kind and friendly. He wants you to have fun and a positive experience. Today was definitely a highlight of our entire family. He took a bunch of videos for us with his GoPro and he transferred them all to my phone for free! It's a touristy town. He could easily charge us but nope. He cares about the experience his customers get. He is so passionate about what he does. There were times he offered help to little kids who were struggling and they weren't even in his class! I could tell that he doesn't do this just for the money. Micah ran into so many people he knew. Seeing his interactions with other explained why he was late. He talked to everyone he ran into. Micah didn't shortchange us. I even think that he gave us more time than we paid for. He didn't rush or become inpatient when we took forever to get to where he was in the water. I know I wrote a lot but he's worth my time writing so many positive things about him. Even my husband who never writes any reviews told me to make sure I write one for Micah.,Thank you, Micah, for an extraordinary adventure and great memories! I honestly cannot say enough good things about this man, he sent us some \"homework\" the night prior so we can make the most of our lessons; after a brief talk we hit the water, Mickey stayed with my 11 y\/o daughter and had her standing up and catching her first wave on her first try. Throughout the morning, he coached us is a professional and in a clearly passionate way to make it a memorable experience for both of us. I could not have been happier with the experience. My son was too nervous to go out so after the lesson Mickey took him out so he could experience how much fun he could have...he immediately begged to rent a board. \t\t\t\t\t\t\tSurfing with Mickey was a highlight of our trip! A few caveats: we are a family from NJ, and will likely never surf again. We just wanted to try it, maybe try to stand a few times, and go home with some pictures and bragging rights. Micah delivered big time for us. It was a private lesson for me and my two kids, so we got a lot of attention. He kept us in the shallower water where we were more comfortable, but helped us catch lots of waves in. It was a blast! He even brought out a Go-Pro, and shared all of his videos with me after. A fun souvenir I was not expecting! Small note: if any of you suffer from seasickness or motion sickness like I do, take a Dramamine before you surf!\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>

\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMy good friends who live in HNL recommended Mickey, and I can't say enough about him. I was bringing my 8yr old twins and their 9yr old step-sister to the islands and wanted to introduce them to surfing. After two hours with him, my daughter wants to be like Bethany Hamilton, her twin brother wants to buy a surf board and their step-sister - terrified of the open water prior to the lesson - won't stop talking about how she got up on the surf board. Twice! He really connected with each of the kids, and catered to each of their abilities. The way he catches the waves with them while using a rowing paddle to paddle, his right foot to keep them close, and a go pro at the end of the paddle to catch all the action is unlike any instructor on the water. And the results are incredible. I'll post pictures to try and give you an idea - and the videos he takes are all included in the very reasonable price (less than shop lessons). By being next to the kids he's somehow able to hold their hand to steady them as they stand up, and instructs them the entire time. Every other instructor on the water pushes their students with the wave and critiques after the fact. Seriously - his technique is unique and extremely effective. Book at least two weeks before you want him, and the Venmo payment was easy. Good communication prior to meeting up, was punctual and professional. I'm coming back for a work trip in two weeks and have him booked for me! Thank you Mickey. If there was anyone that could get these Las Vegas kids dreaming about being surfers it was you. \t\t\t\t\t\t\tI cannot say enough great things about Mickey! He is truly a class act, excellent surf instructor, and all-around great guy. From the initial booking, he was there with pre-practice videos for my son and I to work on and get familiarized, as neither of us had ever surfed. He responded quickly to my many questions, greeted us with enthusiasm, and an upbeat attitude, and put us at ease immediately that we were in good hands. He was patient and helpful during our lesson, assisting us in catching then riding wave after wave, even after \"wiping out\" seconds later in most cases. After an hour, we both were able to \"stand up\" and ride a wave for a short time. My son and and I both came out of the lesson feeling confident we could give it a go ourselves next time. The videos he provided after the lesson were great, high quality, and were loaded directly to my phone so they could be shared immediately with family and friends. Where he went above and beyond is when I injured my foot (my fault) on a rock during the lesson. Afterward, not only did he assist me in getting it looked at and treated, but topped it off with a handful of awesome seashells for my son as a gift! I called him a day in advance and he was able to accommodate us the following day. My kids had fun! Although my eldest daughter quickly got motion sickness, she was able to get a great idea of how surfing is like. We are glad that we went with Micah out of all the other surfing lessons offering around the beach. Highly recommended for any beginners who wanted a patience and friendly teacher. Micah made this experience for my girls something to remember Hawaii by! We loved it so much that we did twice this visit. He was very patience, funny and very supportive. My girls have never surf before but He made my girls feel great and comfortable surfing! They aren't great swimmers but he made them confident!
